As a working mom juggling multiple roles, I’ve often felt the weight of the confidence gap, questioning my abilities and worth. Imposter syndrome is a constant companion, making me reflect deeply on why we feel this way.

The confidence gap is the disparity in self-assurance between men and women, where women often undervalue their abilities despite being just as capable. The confidence gap starts at age six, when girls start to think they’re less smart and less capable than boys. Between the ages of 8 and 14, girls’ confidence levels fall by 30 percent.

Research shows that businesses thrive with more women leaders, resulting in better performance, higher employee satisfaction, and increased profitability. Yet, many of us still doubt ourselves, feel pressured to leave the workforce, or become “queen bees” just to survive.

There has to be a better way.

How Working Moms Can Take Our Confidence Back

  • Reframe Self-Doubt: Understand that self-doubt is a normal part of growth. It’s okay to question yourself, but don’t let it define you. Acknowledge it and move forward, knowing you’re doing better than you think.
  • Seek Mentorship and Support: Surround yourself with people who uplift and encourage you. Mentorship provides guidance and support, helping you navigate challenges and build confidence. Lean on your support network – friends, family, and colleagues who believe in you.
  • Own Your Achievements: Keep track of your successes, no matter how small. Reflecting on your accomplishments helps reinforce your capabilities and reminds you of your worth. Celebrate these wins, because you deserve to.
  • Set Boundaries: Prioritise your well-being by setting clear boundaries at work and home. Learn to say no to tasks that don’t align with your goals or values. Protecting your time and energy is essential for maintaining confidence and reducing stress.
  • Advocate for Yourself: Don’t be afraid to ask for what you deserve – be it a raise, a promotion, or flexible working conditions. Stand up for your needs and know that your contributions are valuable. Advocating for yourself helps bridge the confidence gap and achieve your goals.

As working moms, we deserve to be successful, fairly compensated, and supported. It’s time to reclaim our confidence. By addressing the confidence gap, we can empower ourselves to reach our full potential and create a more inclusive world. Let’s take back our confidence and pave the way for future generations.
